Coming soon announcement! Plus more panhandling..
Posted by administrator under DerbyFever.com Blog

Hey guys!

Good news - Coming Soon - Mobile Viewer! : I've been working with some folks on the side to try and bring a functional viewer to mobile devices!  It is a very light weight (similar in look to the old Java viewer), browser based viewer that I've tested successfully in several mobile environements.  We are currently working on making it a bit prettier, and hope to have it up and running within the month... possibly sooner!

Unrelated Panhandling : Thank you to everyone that has supported my FlashNics project on Kickstarter.  It is really a personal goal of mine to get this thing printed, as I believe the ability exists to use the deck to help teach children certain math skills as an interactive, fun flash card game.  I have also developed a "casual game" 2 player game using the cards that one play tester referred to as "Uno on Steroids."  A different play tester wrote up a nice review on Reddit :

Louisville Board Gamer - Play test review

Anyway, I'm still sputtering a bit to cross the finish line, so I've decided to "chum the well" again and offer some more DerbyFever bonuses...

If you support FlashNics on KickStarter :

If will match credits-for-dollars up to $15 if you back FlashNics on Kickstarter.  The thing to know about KickStarter - you will not be charged if funding for the project isn't successful.  That means, if the project is not funded, you won't be charged a dime and you can keep the credits.     Just promise not to back it and then cheer against me... :)

Now, if it is (hopefully!) funded, KickStarter / Amazon (it uses Amazon's payment system, not PayPal.. but it does accept CC's..) will charge you at your funding level, but there's now more (no Ginsu knives.. I promise)...

As previously offered, I will give you an additional 50% in credits for any sponsor up to $15.   But now for any amount between $15-$30, I will also give you that amount in credits as well as the same 50% bonus.  In other words, if we are funded and..

You supported for $5, you get 250 credits (the initial 500  + an additional 250 if funded)
You supported for $10, you get 1500 credits (the initial 1000  + an additional 500 if funded)
You supported for $15, you get 2250 credits (the initial 1500  + an additional 750 if funded)
You supported for $20, you get 3000 credits (the initial 1500  + an additional 1500 if funded)
You supported for $30, you get 4500 credits (the initial 1500  + an additional 3000 if funded)

That's a 50% bonus for helping me out... plus you can get a real card gamed mailed directly to your house.

The $30 pledge level would cover 4 decks shipped inside the US to share with family and friends, or two decks shipped anywhere in the world.  There are even a few options that will let you help me create a character to put in the game.  Really, how often do you get to do that?!?  :)

Here is a link to the project : FlashNics Kickstarter Project

Thanks again for putting up with me and my outside goals and dreams!  You guys are the best!

Get some free credits! Help out FlashNics!
Posted by administrator under DerbyFever.com Blog

Hey guys!  Since I don't have much advertising on the site, I figured this wasn't too inappropriate.. :)

Although it's unrelated to DerbyFever, I created a card game named FlashNics. :)  It started out as a way to help my son Ben better learn addition / subtraction, but we began playing it with the entire family and we really enjoy it.   I would really like to have a small run of these printed, as I believe they hold not only family playability but education value as well.    As a father with small children, I believe anything I can do to encourage "play learning", especially involving mathematics, is beneficial.

Of course, doing even a small isn't cheap (I need much deeper pockets than I have), so I started a KickStarter campaign to try and fund the initial run.  Needless to say, I'm not doing so hot.  :/ It's probably the ugly face and Kentucky accent in the videos, or maybe it's that my "social network" is all but non-existent outside of the horse racing game.  So I decided to see if I could drum up a little help from you guys... a nickel here and dime there may help get this thing off the ground.  But I won't do so without helping you out as well. :)

If you help support the KickStarter campaign, I will award you as many credits within DerbyFever.com as you supported with up to 1500 game credits, even if the KickStarter fails (so you have the opportunity to get credits for nothing).  And, if it succeeds and the game is realized (meaning you supported the project and get the rewards that come with it AND the previous credits), I'll add 50% more credits (up to 750 game credits).

So it's kind of a no lose : if it fails, you get free credits.  If it succeeds, you get the Kickstarter rewards based on whatever level you supported at as well as free credits... and you're supporting an educational / family game.

Click here to go to the KickStarter campaign.

If you support, just send me your KickStarter ID you supported under and your DerbyFever.com ID and I'll credit you the initial amount ASAP.

..and please to pass this along to anyone that may be interested.. I need all the help I can get.

So that's my spiel.  Thanks for listening, and I apologize for the interruption. :)

Who is coming in for the Oaks / Derby?
Posted by administrator under DerbyFever.com Blog

Hey guys!

Is anyone making it to Louisville this year for the festivities?  If so, and you want to try to get together a bit, let me know!

Use the Connect > Contact admin from inside the game.

I am trying to get a headcount and see if we want to do a formal gathering or just a dinner.  If we have enough I'll try and secure a location.

Thanks!

March 31st - April 8th - I'll be hard to reach
Posted by administrator under DerbyFever.com Blog

Hey folks!

My family and I are going on our yearly vacation.  I do not plan on taking a computer, through I will be taking my iPhone to check in on things (with the ability to log into my home PCs).

My nephew will once again be watching my home but, as you may recall, he has limited computer experience (I actually had to have a friend, Craig, come over last year to fix a problem).  The good news : the new game is up, the new router is up, and all of my power backups have been replaced.  So I doubt anything too bad can happen.  But, if it does, it may take a while to get things righted (still e-mail me if things are down more than 15 minutes).  You may have noticed : I have NOT made any schedule changes.  I believe the new game to be solid enough to run itself during this time. :)

As some players may have noticed : CPU2 is a bit goofy, and it goes down about 25% of the time at night.  I'm sure it will go down again while I'm gone, and I'm sure I'll have to have him reboot it for me.   If you purchase using PayPal and it doesn't go through within 15 minutes, it's likely that CPU2 is down.  If you notice it is up and you did not get credited, feel free to contact me.

Thanks for understanding!

Back up! A few notes..
Posted by administrator under DerbyFever.com Blog

Hey guys!

I once again proved I am not networking guy by taking too long to get the new router and my network jived out, but it DOES work!  So I am hoping for a slight bit of improved speed (likely not too notable) and, more importantly, less  random outages (they haven't been bad lately, but they're still annoying).

A few other notes -

* I did NOT get the updates to the game uploaded.  We were already down enough today, and I didn't want to chance messing it up and stayign down any longer.  I am going to try to get the BTB on the main page tonight however.

* The backup database and the live one got a little out of snych.

For both of these reasons, I am going to have to take the game down again for a few hours very soon to get the updates loaded and the DB resynched.

Thanks for your patience!

Downtime Early Monday - New Stuff likely
Posted by administrator under DerbyFever.com Blog

Hey guys!

I am going to do my monthly backup Monday, and will also be uploading an update to the game.

This update covers several small issues, and will also likely have a couple new additions (including the BTB list on the front page and almost surely the addition I have been working on, though it's still not quite done).

Thanks!

..a bit more downtime within the next day or two..
Posted by administrator under DerbyFever.com Blog

Hey guys!

I spent all day fighting this router.  I'm aout 98% done, but I can't figure out how to do port forwarding correctly.  So I'm going to have to regroup and try again in a few days.

Sorry for the delay today, and my inability to get this thing finshed; I just didn't want to keep the game down any longer today.

Some downtime likely on Monday - New Router!
Posted by administrator under DerbyFever.com Blog

Heya guys!

My current router (while performing as valiantly as possible up until this point) is not qualified for the traffic the new version of the site pushes.   After talking to my tech-guy / good friend Edison from http://ITArrows.com (famous around this board when I have problems), I plunked down a good chunk of dough for a new WatchGuard router.  It should help reduce (hopefully eliminate) the (approximately) weekly router reboots I currently perform.  It should also improve performance just a little bit (though maybe not notably for most).

Problem is : I have to install this sucker.  I have a lot of my local ports computers statically routed and, while I don't expect any problem, it'll take some time.

Early / Midday Mondays are one of the "more dead" times around the game, so that seems like as good a time as any.  I'll probably start shortly after 9:00 AM EST and work until I'm finished.  I'll also back up the databases and programs on that day, so I'm expecting several hours of downtime.  If all works well, I'll be back up around around 1:00 PM EST.   But no promises... ;)

Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Some like it HOT!
Posted by administrator under DerbyFever.com Blog

Moved to the top : As always - If you don’t see these changes, you need the newest javascript - you may have to reload your pages, empty your cache, or use an alternate link like http://smartacre.com.horseracing or http://swarmlogic.com/horseracing  until your browser picks up the change.

I’ve received a lot of questions about *CPU value races.  The good news is their back, and they’re HOT!

Ok..  I’m obviously overusing and capitalizing the word hot.  Why?  Well, because we have a new race classification : the HOT race.

A HOT race is a race that is opened up for entry, carded 10 minutes later, and run 5 minutes after that. Have a few minutes to kill?  Bored in the chat room?  Get a HOT race!

These aren’t intended to “take the place” of our normal racing, but I am adding them as a fun compliment.  Not every horse is a star, and sometimes it’s enjoyable to do things between our normal processing.

A few things to note about HOT races :

·         They cost 25 credits; currently the game doesn’t card any on its own.

·         They can only be a Maiden or Allowance race; the only restriction allowed is the *CPU value restriction.  Also, you do NOT have to have 6 races under your belt to run a *CPU restricted race.

·         They offer far fewer points (12 / 8 / 4 for W/P/S ; travel does apply, but no other point modifiers apply), generally smaller purses (M = $5000, A=$10,000), and do not count toward points earned when determining entries into stakes races.  Note, however, that these races do count, so you couldn’t, for instance, race a first time starter in a HOT race and then get the “first time points modifier” when entering him into a regular race.

·         You can only race a particular horse once per day on the site regardless of race type

·         They can run with results posted within 15 minutes but, if they are run at times the game is processing things, it may take a bit longer.  Notable times include the race carding that occurs at 3:00 PM EST on Thursday, Friday starting around noon – 3 PM EST, From Midnight – 1:00 AM for daily processing, and normal large race times (Saturday and Sunday between about noon and 3 PM EST)

·         HOT races don’t affect the conditioning of a horse as much as a regular race, so they come back less tired (though their chance to sustain an injury is the same).  The “wear and tear” on a horse longeterm, however, is the same.  To minimize “wear and tear” a bit so horses can race more often in HOT races, I treat any race that takes place less than a week after the previous race as a 1 week rest.  Still, running a horse regularly once a week for an extended period of time is a pretty damaging proposition on any horse longterm.

How do you buy a hot race? Almost exactly like you buy a normal race.  There is a new “Buy Hot Race!” button on the training screen.

How do I enter a hot race someone else has carded?  Just go to RaFi for the horse you want to enter.  Click on the “Hot Races” to find the HOT races fitting your RaFi criteria.  Or, to circumvent RaFi, hit the “Any Hot Fit” button and all HOT races that your horse can enter are listed instead.  These will change regularly as people card races.    Note : Hot races will NOT appear in the normal RaFi search.  One exception would be if you entered a HOT race and then did a typical RaFi search (which wouldn’t make a lot of sense); the HOT race you entered would appear as Entered.

And I will keep an eye on things to ensure they are going as intended without being too easy to get points in. :)

Have fun!

--Mike
